Je beleeft dit duistere verhaal vanuit de derde persoon en maakt kennis met het gedicht dat een belangrijke rol heeft gespeeld in de erkenning van het Toscaanse dialect en de hedendaagse beeldvorming van de hel en het vagevuur voor een groot deel heeft bepaald. Het gedicht volgt Dante op zijn reis langs de dreigende negen kringen van de hel op zoek naar zijn geliefde Beatrice.

La Divina Commedia werd in de 14e eeuw geschreven en uitgegeven, en in het Italiaans voorgelezen. Het werk was in die tijd dus, in tegenstelling tot de Bijbel, toegankelijk voor een groot publiek. Het gedicht geeft een allegorische blik op het christelijke hiernamaals en de helse afstraffingen. In deel een, Dante’s Inferno, doorkruist Dante de negen kringen van de hel; het voorportaal, lust, vraatzucht, hebzucht, gramschap, ketterij, geweld, bedrog en verraad.
